Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery

In Adjustable gastric banding procedure, a hollow band made of special material is placed around the stomach near its upper end, creating a small pouch and a narrow passage into the larger remainder of the stomach. The band is then inflated with a salt solution. It can be tightened or loosened over time to change the size of the passage by increasing or decreasing the amount of salt solution.

LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY

Laparoscopy is commonly performed procedure to Investigate and some key hole surgeries on abdominal and pelvic organs.

Laparoscopy is direct visualization of the abdominal cavity and intra-abdominal organs by using a laparoscopy. The laparoscope is a long thin instrument with a light source at its tip, to light up the inside of the abdomen or pelvis. Fibreoptic fibres carry images from a lens, also at the tip of the instrument, to a video monitor, which the surgeon and other theatre staff can view in real time.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is put into the abdomen through a special needle that is inserted just above the navel. This gas helps to separate the organs inside the abdominal cavity, making it easier for the physician to see the the intra-abdominal organs during laparoscopy. The gas is removed at the end of the procedure.

LAPAROSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

Sleeve Gastrectomy (Tube Gastrectomy) procedure involves removing the lateral 2/3rds of the stomach with a stapling device. It can be done laparoscopically ( keyhole surgery) but is not reversible. It basically leaves a stomach tube instead of a stomach sack.

LAPAROSCOPIC GASTRIC BYPASS

In Gastric Bypass procedure, a small stomach pouch is created to restrict food intake. Next, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the lower stomach, the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine), and the first portion of the jejunum (the second segment of the small intestine). This bypass reduces the absorption of nutrients and thereby reduces the calorie intake.

Adjustable Treatment

The LAP-BAND System is an adjustable weight loss surgery. The diameter of the band is adjustable for a customized weight-loss rate. Your individual needs can change as you lose weight.

To modify the size of the band, its inner surface can be inflated or deflated with a saline solution. The band is connected by tubing to an access port, which is placed well below the skin during surgery. After the operation, the surgeon can control the amount of saline in the band by entering the port with a fine needle through the skin.

The LAP-BAND® System Advantage

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

LAP-BAND® System Overview

In this procedure, a hollow band made of special material is placed around the stomach near its upper end, creating a small pouch and a narrow passage into the larger remainder of the stomach. The band is then inflated with a salt solution. It can be tightened or loosened over time to change the size of the passage by increasing or decreasing the amount of salt solution. The entire procedure is done laparoscopically, where a laparoscope is inserted through the abdominal wall through small surgical incisions.

It induces weight loss by reducing the capacity of the stomach, which restricts the amount of food that can be consumed.

Minimally Invasive Approach

During the procedure, surgeons usually use laparoscopic techniques (using small incisions and long-shafted instruments), to implant an inflatable silicone band into the patient’s abdomen. Like a wristwatch, the band is fastened around the upper stomach to create a new, tiny stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food you eat. It also creates a small outlet that slows the emptying process into the stomach and the intestines. As a result, patients experience an earlier sensation of fullness and are satisfied with smaller amounts of food. In turn, this results in weight loss.

Coming soon is an interactive presentation on Lap band procedure.

Least Traumatic Procedure

Since there is no cutting, stapling or stomach re-routing involved in the LAP-BAND System procedure, it is considered the least traumatic of all weight loss surgeries. The laparoscopic approach to the surgery also offers the advantages of reduced post-operative pain, shortened hospital stay and quicker recovery. If for any reason the LAP-BAND System needs to be removed, the stomach generally returns to its original form.

Patient Testimonials – Kelly Ellis

KELLY ELLIS

I know this sounds cliche, but Dr. Eslami had not only given me my life back, but given me a whole new life. I’m healthier and more active than I’ve been in the past 20 – 25 years. I think I was in junior high school the last time my waist was this size. It’s exciting to be able to by clothes off the rack and not have to pay a premium for the plus sizes and be able to find stylish clothes that fit and not having to accept things that fit. I have more confidence now which has helped me in my professional life. Instead of going quietly to the back of the room, I’m more outgoing and approachable. I know Dr. Eslami gave me the tools, now I am just using them to better my quaility of life. I would strongly urge anybody that is having health or emotional issues due tho their weight to at least sit down and have a consultation with Dr. Eslami. I would do it again tomorrow. Prior to surgery I heard many horror stories, family and friends tried to discourage me from having the surgery, I am so glad I used my better judgement and had the procedure. It has given me my life back.

SHARON ANDERSON

This is, by far, the hardest lifestyle change I have experienced. I had the Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass. In 18 months, I have lost 112 lbs, no more high blood pressure, GERD, and my thryoid is normal. Meds have pretty much gone by the wayside. Exercise, such as walking up and down stairs are so easy. No more loss of breath. I have experienced a reaction to the protein powders, so I have to rely on my diet to ensure my protein levels. Thanks, Dr. Eslami and staff for all your kind care and understanding, during and after my recovery.

STEPHANIE STINSON

Dr. Eslami has given me a life that i thought i could never have. I have been overweight since childhood and never knew what thin was. I continued to struggle with my weight as an adult, and was unsuccessful at dieting. I had my surgery Aug 3, 2011. I have lost 110 pounds and have been maintaining the loss for the past 18 months! I could have never done it without the support and encouragement from Dr. Eslami and his staff!
